skin, the protective covering of our body bears assault of changing climates and seasons. Scorching summer heat upsets the skin with sunburn and dehydration. Thus the skin needs rest and rejuvenation in winter. But winter takes its toll on the skin. The cold, dry winter causes drying of the skin making it scaly. Lack of moisture out enough leads doors cracked skin. Indoor heating also removes the traces of moisture and aggravates dryness of the skin. Cracked, chapped and dry leading to various infections of the skin. And the skin should be rejuvenated and care should be taken to keep the skin moist, soft and smooth.
The winter season is marked as Hemanta ritu in ayurveda. Hemanta ritu starts from mid November and ends in mid January. This tomb southern solstice which is called as kala visarga or Dakshinayana in ayurveda. In winter, fire or agni body (digestive power) increases with the support of vata. Fire increased body still digests heavy foods easily and quickly. When sufficient food is not available for the amplified body fire it affects the nutritive fluids of the body leading to defects vata. Thus, the flawed vata assigns its qualities of coldness, dryness and roughness of the skin. Thus, in winter, great care must be taken to protect the skin with various measures regarding diets and lifestyles

1. Drink plenty of water to keep skin hydrated. Drinking hot water in winter prevents vices of vata and diseases resulting from vata.
2. Soups are sour and salty -. Vata balance
3. Include honey in the diet.
4. Avoid junk food consumption, too much candy and food oil that they lead to weight gain.
5. Your diet should ideally include cane juice, milk and clarified butter (ghee) during the winter.
6. Stay away from cold and refrigerated foods such as ice cream, milk shakes as they vitiate vata.
7. Gorge on foods hot and heavy to meet the increase in the burning of the body.

1. Always wear warm clothes which are made of wool, silk and cotton.
2. When you wear clothes in layers wear cotton clothing next to your skin as they do not cause skin allergy. Furthermore, they absorb sweat. Where as synthetic clothes fail to do so. The unabsorbed sweat contains microorganisms that cause skin infections.
3. Avoid long hot showers and bathroom.
4. Three minutes quick bath is recommended.
5. Twenty to 30 minutes of aerobic exercise three times a week can give your skin a healthy glow.
6. Avoid repeated washing of the face. It washes the natural oils from your skin and makes the skin dry, scaly and wrinkled. Use lukewarm water instead of hot water to wash your face.
7. Use a humidifier inside to place moisture in the air.

2. Apply a moisturizing lotion liberally all over the body.
3. Smear lip balm on the lips from becoming chapped lips.
